BIRDIE NEWBORN IS the director of College Editions and publisher of Bandanna Books. Her career began by teaching in Tanzania in the Peace Corps, editing an alternative newspaper, Middle Earth, in Iowa City, Liberation News Service, five years learning the publishing business in New York City with temp stints at Appleton-Century, Praeger Publishers, Random House, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich while doing freelance reporting, setting up a poetry press, Mudborn Press, in Santa Barbara, serving Black Sparrow Press (20 years), Wadsworth, Scott Foresman, ABC-Clio and, simultaneously, establishing Bandanna Books, a college publisher, which is still active today with a dozen titles in print. Editor, translator, publisher, typesetter, designer — if it has to do with books, Birdie has done it. "To Build a Better Book."
